SAFETY UPDATE VULCAN MARTIN MARIETTA AMONG LATEST SAFETY AWARD WINNERS NSSGA NAMES ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD WINNERS T he National Stone Sand Gravel Association NSSGA named 10 Gold Award recipients in its 2018 Environmental Excellence Awards program This years recipients are Cemex s 474 Sand Mine in Orlando Florida and its Lake Wales Sand Mine in Polk County Florida CRH Americas Tilcon Mount Hope Quarry in Parsippany New Jersey LafargeHolcim s Honey Island Sand Gravel in Pearl River Louisiana and its Presque Isle Quarry in Presque Isle Michigan Lehigh Hanson s Federal Quarry in McCook Illinois Martin Marietta s Churchville Quarry in Cockeysville Maryland Specialty Granules Charmian Plant in Blue Ridge Summit Pennsylvania and its Kremlin Plant in Pembine Wisconsin and Vulcan Materials Manteno Quarry in Naperville Illinois Cemexs Lake Wales Sand Mine also earned a Two Star of Excellence Award this year The distinction recognizes operations that have received Gold Awards in both Environmental and Community Relations Excellence within five years The Cemex operation received a Community Relations Gold Award in 2017 According to NSSGA the Environmental Excellence Gold Awards awards provide national recognition for NSSGA producer member operations actively contributing to the maintenance of the environment in and around their operations as evidenced by a corporate commitment to the exemplary use of environmental controls and systems This award is based in part on the extent to which an operation meets and exceeds technical environmental and regulatory requirements It is not based on aesthetic or beautification criteria T he National Stone Sand Gravel Association NSSGA revealed the Gold Award recipients of its 2018 Safety Excellence and Sterling Safety Awards Among the sites to receive a Safety Excellence Award is Vulcan Materials Co s Corona Stone in Glendale California which earns the award in the large category Two Martin Marietta sites receive Safety Excellence Awards as well including the Benson Quarry in Greensboro North Carolina medium and the Helotes Quarry in San Antonio small According to NSSGA the Safety Excellence Awards were created in 1987 to promote safe working conditions and practices and to recognize individual operations with exemplary safety records among NSSGA member companies The awards recognize individual operations that have gone the longest without a reportable injury in their size category based on data provided by the Mine Safety Health Administration MSHA NSSGAs Sterling Safety Awards meanwhile were created in 1994 to recognize the companies that have the lowest total injury incidence rate for the previous year in their category among NSSGA members based on data MSHA provides Receiving the Sterling Safety Awards this year are Vulcan large Martin Stone Quarries medium and DeSiato Sand Gravel small Ensuring that each employee can go home safely at the end of each shift is the top priority for NSSGA member companies says Mike Johnson NSSGA president and CEO As a result of that commitment according to statistics it now is safer to work in a quarry than in a retail store NSSGAs annual awards program recognizes U S aggregate operations for their commitment to safety their continuing performance of safe environmental practices and their efforts and activities that continue to enhance the image of the industry NSSGA was slated to recognize these Gold Award recipients at the Legislative Policy Forum in Washington D C H A R D N U M B E R S THE NUMBER OF FATALITIES in the metal and nonmetal 9 mining sector through Aug 22 according to the Mine Safety Health Administration Through the same date in 2017 there were seven fatalities reported in metal and nonmetal mining 38 PIT QUARRY October 2018 pitandquarry com
