Pit & Quarry, May 2016
Eat Sleep Mine at Sleep Mine features 59 black and white photographs of coal miners from Kentucky and West Virginia taken by famed photographer George Pickow in 1948 along with complimentary artifacts from our collections This exhibition is unique for the museum in that it depicts the life of a miner as opposed to primarily representing the equipment processes and outputs of mining It is a collection of photographs depicting the lives of the miners from an outsiders perspective as Pickow was a professional photographer not a miner himself Many of the featured artifacts to be on display with the photographs are objects from our collections that have never been on display and these same objects are visible within the photographs themselves According to Stephanie Johnson curator This exhibition puts the artifacts we have in the direct context of a miners daily life This will be a temporary exhibit only on display through Sept 1st 2016 To learn more about the National Mining Hall of Fame Museum visit www mininghalloffame org a a compliment
