Tier 4 Final Emissions regulations are reaching their peak as Tier 4 Final engines begin making their way into the marketplace What do you need to know about the regulations T ier 4 Final emissions requirements begin next year but some equipment manufacturers are already selling engines that are Tier 4 Final compliant The last of the Tier 4 regulations take affect beginning in 2015 and following is an overview of the law with information provided by the Diesel Technology Forum www dieselforum org and various equipment manufacturers Tier 4 refers to a generation of federal air emissions standards established by the U S Environmental Protection Agency EPA that apply to new diesel engines used in off highway equipment It requires manufacturers to reduce the levels of particulate matter and oxides of nitrogen NOx to a level that is 50 96 percent lower than the existing generation of diesel engines Tier 4 emissions requirements apply to new products only and do not apply retroactively to any existing machines or equipment Off road engines are responsible for 47 percent of particulate matter PM and 25 percent of NOx emissions from all mobile sources nationwide according to the EPA Diesel exhaust contains small carbon particles and other toxic substances that are created during an incomplete fuel burning process When inhaled repeatedly these small particles may aggravate asthma and allergies or cause other serious health problems Tier 4 Interim and Tier 4 Final Tier 4 regulations are being introduced in two phases Tier 4 Interim began in 2011 Tier 4 Final begins in 2014 Tier 4i or interim refers to the emissions standard that became effective on Jan 1 2011 for all new high horsepower diesel generator engines The Tier 4i standard significantly cuts NOx emissions Tier 4F or final refers to the emissions standard that will become effective on all large stationary generator sets in 2015 EDITED BY DARREN CONSTANTINO 12 PIT QUARRY May 2013 www pitandquarry com
