BY KEVIN YANIK Hall of Fame inaugural class announced Deister Sr Hagenbuch Ireland Luck Jr McLanahan Mellott Jr Taggart P it Quarrys inaugural class of Hall of Fame inductees will be honored at a black tie induction ceremony and dinner Sunday March 17 The event follows the NSSGA Chairmans Reception at the Grand Hyatt San Antonio The seven inductees were selected by a group of peers from a pool of nominees submitted by industry experts and you our readers Heres a glance at the inaugural class Emil Deister Sr Deister Machine Co The founder of Deister Machine served as the companys president and general manager until his death in 1961 Under his leadership the company began manufacturing vibrating screens for the separation of materials according to particle size LeRoy Hagenbuch Philippi Hagenbuch Hagenbuch introduced the first commercially available tailgate for off highway haul trucks He is credited with other inventions and refinements as well including specialized liner packages to mitigate the weight consumed by liners and on board weigh systems found on haul trucks Charles W Ireland Vulcan Materials Co Ireland directed Vulcans transition to a public corporation and in effect put in motion the companys rise into mega producer territory Charles Luck Jr Luck Stone Luck started his company as a single quarry and built it into what is now the 11th largest crushed stone producing company in the U S Samuel Calvin McLanahan McLanahan Corp McLanahan designed nearly all of the equipment that came out of his foundry from the time he purchased one sixth of McLanahan Corp He conceived a way to wash clay from the rock in his familys phosphate deposits and he invented the single roll crusher Paul C Mellott Jr Mellott Co Mellott has been involved in his family company for nearly 40 years and he has been highly visible within the industry away from his company working closely with different associations to build political clout for aggregates Arthur Taggart Columbia and Yale Universities Two of Arthur Taggarts works the Handbook of Ore Dressing and Handbook of Mineral Dressing are essential text for nearly every aspect of aggregates processing as nearly every piece of equipment involved in processing is based on his research Upcoming Events NSSGA Convention March 17 20 San Antonio AGG1 Aggregates Academy Expo March 19 21 San Antonio Bauma 2013 April 15 21 Munich Germany Mining deaths in 2012 second lowest on record Preliminary data released from MSHA indicates that mining fatality rates reached an all time low for the second straight year in 2012 Fatality rates are calculated based on the number of mining deaths per 200000 hours worked Thirty six miners including 17 in metal nonmetal mines died in work related accidents at U S mines last year The 36 represents the second lowest annual fatality total on record and is one more than the historic low of 35 deaths that occurred in 2009 Three of the 17 miners killed at metal nonmetal mines had less than one year of experience at the mine Five miners had less than one year of experience at the job or task they were performing The leading cause of all miner deaths was powered haulage which claimed the lives of 10 miners Other common causes were machinery accidents slip or fall accidents and rib falls 6 PIT QUARRY March 2013 www pitandquarry com
