T R A I N I N G Producer offers safety training About 90 percent of Complete Safety Solutions clients are construction contractors BY BRIAN RICHESSON W hat began as a job more than 20 years ago became a calling for Randy Newcomer Working for Rohrers Quarry in Lititz Pa Newcomer serves as director of training and services for Complete Safety Solutions a safety services branch of the third generation family owned company With the quarrys limited reserves in mind the company asked What could we do to get into other areas that we have some experience with We wanted something to pass on to the fourth generation Newcomer explained Since 2000 a number of things have happened Complete Safety Solutions Randy Newcomer top right leads training in Lititz Pa Rohrers Quarry expanded its operation with services in fleets drilling and safety The latter segment started in 2000 with Mine Safety Health Administration MSHA requirements training and it has evolved from there We started first offering it to contractors who needed training and then saw it as a way of expanding quarry business into another related field Newcomer said We changed our name to Complete Safety Solutions at the beginning of 2008 to better portray what we were doing Newcomer said about 90 percent of the companys clients are construction contractors such as steel fabricators crane operators electricians and painters Courses are offered in five main fields new miner introduction MSHA annual refresher first aid CPR AED fire extinguisher and safety committee training The MSHA refresher course has been the most popular Newcomer said because the material changes often In addition Complete Safety Solutions partners with compliance training company Eduwhere to offer online courses Rohrers Quarry has its own training facility where its not uncommon to have multiple companies represented in any given class The company also aims to keep class sizes small The quality of the class goes up when people of different walks get into the discussion Newcomer said Its a plus to address different groups at once Its also not uncommon for the company to travel and conduct training at a clients site many in southeastern or southcentral Pennsylvania Complete Safety Solutions markets its classes as using hands on engaging methods to provide effective training Newcomer said problemsolving techniques and small group work are incorporated into training and lectures are often avoided Courses are offered year round said Newcomer whose staff includes Lois Rollman training and services coordinator and Tom Kifolo business manager We are pleasantly surprised even with this economy we havent slowed down Newcomer said People are still making sure they get the training when it might be a corner to cut www completesafetysolutions com www eduwhere com 30 PIT QUARRY July 2009 www pitandquarry com
