In addition to his contributions to McLanahan Sidney has regularly been involved with a number of industry associations including NSSGA the Society of Mining Metallurgical Engineers the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute and the Wyoming Mining Association He is a ROCKPAC trustee who serves on the Altoona Blair County Development Corp board of directors and the Penn State Alumni board of directors Described by his peers as a top industry leader and mentor Sidney remains an active part of McLanahans board and other industry trade associations following his retirement at the end of 2018 WASHINGTON SAMUEL TYLER Born in Cleveland in 1835 Washington Samuel Tyler was the founder of Cleveland Wire Works a company that was renamed W S Tyler in 1872 Tylers company expanded from 11 employees to 30 within its first year of business becoming a pioneer in the manufacturing of steel wire for a range of specialty and standard products In 1878 W S Tyler introduced the first fully mechanical weaving looms as well as wire crimped in stages improving durability in screen decks By 1910 W S Tyler introduced the standard screen scale table with geometrically graded apertures leading to customer testing particle analysis and the development of the Tyler Standard sieve series In the years that followed Tylers company introduced the Ro Tap sieve shaker hook strips for screen tensioning and a fully mechanical vibrating screen Haver Boecker which provides screening washing and pelletizing solutions across the aggregate industry purchased W S Tyler in 1998 P Q MOMENTS IN TIME THE 2019 CLASS 1872 Washington Samuel Tyler establishes Cleveland Wire Works a wire weaving mill that is quickly rebranded in his name The company started with only 11 employees and the plant built adjacent to the Cleveland Pittsburgh Railroad was an old two story building measuring 40 ft x 75 ft Later years brought mechanical weaving looms from Tyler that expedited the manufacturing of woven wire cloth as well as cutting edge tech that elevated the industrys ability to process aggregate more efficiently 1952 Twenty four year old Gene Fisher establishes Fisher Sand Gravel Co laying the foundation for what would become one of the largest sand and gravel producers in the United States Fisher pictured here later in life launched General Steel Supply Co in 1967 to be the equipment support arm to Fisher Sand Gravel allowing him to be innovative when building custom and top quality aggregate processing equipment 1972 Manfred Freissle pictured at left patents the first modular synthetic screen deck system calling it Polydex In the years that follow Freissle receives a number of patents including several in the United States for screening technologies that are still utilized by todays aggregate producers Toward the end of the 1970s Freissle co founds Polydeck Screen Corp in Spartanburg South Carolina 2012 George Sidney president and COO of McLanahan Corp helps to orchestrate key acquisitions that strategically position his company for future growth as McLanahan acquires Universal Engineering Corp and the assets of Eagle Iron Works Looking back on these acquisitions Sidney says We recognized if we were going to go other places that we needed more product line Thats one of the reasons why I wanted to go after the Universal Engineering line a more comprehensive line of crushing and feeding equipment 2019 Fisher Freissle Sidney and Tyler are formally recognized together with their inductions to the Pit Quarry Hall of Fame during a ceremony in Indianapolis pitandquarry com February 2019 PIT QUARRY 35 FROM TOP HAVER BOECKER FISHER INDUSTRIES POLYDECK MCLANAHAN
