UPtoSPEED ED UPt PRODUCERS ICYMI Vulcan Materials invests in Georgia plant ulcan Materials Co invested 50 million in plant safety and customer service updates at its Stockbridge V Georgia plant according to a report from the South Metro Neighbor Vulcan Materials vice president of permitting and external affairs Jimmy Fleming says the plant is fully automated allowing click and point operation to produce construction materials This allows safer and more efficient gate operation and more consistent loads for customers at loadout bins Fleming says Emphasis during construction was also placed on environmental controls and features such as automated dust suppression valves and road sprinklers According to Fleming the Stockbridge quarry is the oldest continuously operating aggregate operation in Georgia Originally starting operations around 1875 it became the Stockbridge Stone Co in 1946 In 1958 Vulcan acquired it forming the basis for its Georgia operations About 150 Vulcan Materials employees and family as well as elected officials and neighbors turned out for a ribbon cutting event In other company news Vulcan reached an agreement with the Department of Justice that will allow the company to complete its proposed acquisition of Aggregates USA Under the terms of the agreement Vulcan will divest Aggregates USAs Tennessee assets and an aggregate quarry in Abingdon Virginia Vulcan will retain all of the Aggregates USA assets in Georgia Florida and South Carolina I N C A S E Y O U M I S S E D I T EDUCATION SANDVIK DYNO NOBEL TO LAUNCH MINING ACADEMY Sandvik Mining Rock Technology and Dyno Nobel will host their first Mining Academy April 10 12 at the Chateau on the Lake Resort and Convention Center in Branson Missouri The program will be styled after the companies Quarry Academy program lasting three days and including lectures workshops equipment and blast simulators and a field tour According to the companies Mining Academy will look at the full production stream of unit operations The event aimed specifically at underground room and pillar limestone aggregate producers will give attendees a big picture view of best practices and insights on current and evolving technology for the industry The seminar will also focus on improving safety optimizing production and saving money PRODUCERS FORMER CEMEX USA PRESIDENT JOINS SUMMIT MATERIALS Summit Materials named Karl Watson Jr as its executive vice president and COO effective Jan 8 Watson the former president of Cemex USA will succeed Douglas Rauh We are very pleased to have Karl PRODUCERS FAIRMOUNT SANTROL UNIMIN CORP ANNOUNCE PLANS TO MERGE Fairmount Santrol will merge with Unimin Corp a wholly owned subsidiary of SCR Sibelco NV The new company is expected to have 45 million tons of annual sand and mineral processing capacity and 3 million tons of annual coating capacity According to Fairmount Santrol and Unimin the new company will combine the two organizations product portfolios and asset footprints to create an industry leading propane and industrial materials solution provider The combined company will serve both energy and industrial customers In addition the combined company will operate a comprehensive logistics platform with large scale terminal networks across North America By combining the complementary strengths of both Unimin and Fairmount Santrol we will create a premier provider of industrial materials and proppant solutions with benefits and growth opportunities that far surpass what either company could achieve alone says Jenniffer Deckard president and CEO 6 PIT QUARRY February 2018 pitandquarry com
