S P O N S O R E D C O N T E N T LEADING EDGE COMPANIES Van der Graaf GRIZZLYDRIVE DESIGN DRUM MOTOR For the past 35 years Van der Graaf VDG has been designing and manufacturing drum motors for an array of industries such as food processing courier postal parcel airline baggage handling automotive and other applications that utilize belt conveyors to move or process products Among the most demanding conveyor operating environments are aggregate and mining applications Conveyor drives are required to perform under abrasive dusty and high vibratory conditions which can shorten the life of electric motors gear reducers bearings sprockets chains and V belts The harsh and demanding operating environment of the mining and aggregate industries and high production demands pose many challenges among which is motor and gear failure Failure is mainly due to abrasive dust in coal mines fine powdery dust in limestone quarries abrasive steel particles in iron ore mines as well as extreme belt tension Although the drum motor has been used extensively to drive conveyor belts it has not been used to a great extent in those industries because the standard design did not address the operational conditions that exist in mines and quarries The engineers at Van der Graaf VDG have expanded extensive research and development in the last five years to produce the new GrizzlyDrive design drum motor to address the industrys specific operating challenges The GrizzlyDrive can operate from the extreme cold 50 F to extreme hot temperatures The drum motor is a one component conveyor drive with no external motor gearbox belts chains sprockets sheaves or couplings All components of the drum motor are housed inside the drum minimizing drive space increasing efficiency and virtually eliminating maintenance In addition the GrizzlyDrive is designed exclusively with specific features to reliably perform and operate in harsh environments and demanding conditions The end flanges are machined with a concave profile to allow discharge of dust debris and prevent build up between the conveyor frame and the conveyor drive The robust mechanical seals are designed to prevent abrasive dust and water to penetrate the unit The heavy duty cylindrical roller bearings have been designed for high static and dynamic rating to absorb heavy shock loads and high belt tension The planetary and coaxial gear configuration can absorb the high starting torque 240 percent of nominal torque produced by the high torque design C electric motor that is able to start the conveyor under full load conditions The electric motor windings are manufactured with heavy duty magnet wire and encapsulated with the vacuum pressure impregnation VPI process to withstand vibration and shock loads The patented IronGrip high performance lagging has sections of welded metal bars either straight or chevron pattern located between the vulcanized rubber segments with or without ceramic embedded tiles eliminating shear force increasing durability and lifespan The GrizzlyDrive drum motor has been designed exclusively for mining and aggregate applications requiring to perform and operate in harsh environments and demanding conditions The GrizzlyDrive is available from 3 HP up to 500 HP and from 85 to 42 diameter VAN DER GRAAF 13771 Cavaliere Drive Shelby Township MI 48315 PHONE 888 326 1476 EMAIL info@ vandergraaf com WEBSITE www vandergraaf com 102 PIT QUARRY December 2018 pitandquarry com VAN DER GRAAF
