S P E C I A L S E C T I O N C O N V E Y I N G M A T E R I A L H A N D L I N G ALL ABOARD Virginia producer Carmeuse Lime and Stone installs a state of the art rail loadout facility in a timely and trouble free fashion W ith a new customer new demands and a new business opportunity in tow Carmeuse Lime and Stones Middletown Va plant required a new look The limestone operation 80 miles west of Washington D C opened an impressive rail loadout facility in January that capped a whirlwind nine months of planning and construction The end result was a system capable of loading about 4000 tph 100 railcars in a five hour window and more than meeting the producers expectations for supplying a power plant with a flue gas desulfurization product That was the challenge of the job loading 100 cars in 12 hours said Andy Wright project manager overseeing seven plants for Carmeuse including the Middletown operation We built a system capable of loading that amount in half the time in case we had any problems Included in the facelift was a new crushing plant capable of producing 750000 tons of limestone per year Wright said that two things went right on the 10 million job Kemper Equipment supplied the equipment and Kinsley Construction installed it Company history Kemper Equipment based in Honey Brook Pa is a distributor of aggregate processing equipment as well as a designer and fabricator of the support steel chutes and transfer points between the conveyors it manufactures It is also a fullservice dealer of parts Kemper has completed more than 3000 projects since 1980 It initially covered only the Mid Atlantic region but in the last 15 years it has worked up and down the East Coast and Canada on crushing screening and loading projects Kemper has worked with Pittsburgh based Carmeuse in the past supplying conveyors at several locations It also has supplied Carmeuse with a complete crushing and screening plant BY BRIAN RICHESSON Take note According to Carmeuse Lime and Stone Product Manager Andy Wright this type of system is more common in the coal industry so its rare to see so much stone loaded so quickly 20 PIT QUARRY August 2010 www pitandquarry com
