AGG1 AGGREGATES FORUM EXPO industry continue to work its political muscle to spur investment in roads and bridges and other critical infrastructure Easton lamented the fact that the United States has fallen from eighth to 16th on the world economic forums infrastructure ratings She went on to say that while the debt crisis is an impediment to infrastructure investment a solution should be achieved New chairman Ron Summers senior vice president Materials Group for Glendora Calif based CalPortland Co was elected NSSGAs 2012 chairman of the board His election came during the groups board of directors meeting and his term began at that time Ron Summers is a champion of our association and is widely recognized as Summers an industry veteran with an overarching understanding of the aggregates business that he applies to the needs faced by the industry as a whole said NSSGA President and CEO Joy Pinniger His leadership will continue to enhance NSSGAs strength as a unifying voice of the aggregates industry from coast to coast necessary for todays challenges Wendt award Tony Basolo 1997 chairman of the National Stone Association and former president of Dolese Bros Co was named the 15th annual Barry K Wendt Memorial Commitment Award winner for his dedication to the construction aggregates industry his family and his community George Sidney immediate past chairman of the NSSGAs Manufacturers Services Division made the announcement at the convention The award will be presented at the NSSGA board of directors meeting in October in Colorado Springs Colo Basolo joined Dolese Bros in 1972 and served as the companys president for the last nine years of his career until his retirement in February 2010 His leadership enabled his company his employees and his customers to grow and prosper in Oklahoma and the surrounding areas and made a positive contribution to many professionals and organizations Safety and health pro Zach Knoop corporate director of safety for Knife River Co was named NSSGAs 2011 James M Christie Safety Health Professional the association announced The award established in 1987 provides national recognition to an individual who has made superior and substantial contributions toward proactive safe and healthful operating practices The award presentation came during the Honor Awards ceremony Knoop presented a case study Knife Rivers Journey to Safety Excellence during AGG1 He along with Mike Williamsen Caterpillar Safety Services presented the processes tools and techniques Knoop used in the Caterpillars Zero Incident Performance Process which helped elevate Knife River to the next level of safety Excellent operations NSSGA announced the Gold Silver and Bronze winners of its Safety Environmental and Community Relations Excellence Awards in addition to the associations top honor the Stars of Excellence for operations that accumulate Gold Awards in Safety Environmental or Community Relations over a five year period The awards program recognizes aggregate operations throughout the United States and AGG1 briefs Kyle Petty at ROCKPAC reception NSSGAs ROCKPAC political action committee hosted a private reception in the NASCAR Hall of Fame with special guest Kyle Petty who stepped in at the last moment after his father NASCAR Hall of Famer Richard Petty was unable to attend owing to a family emergency Petty shared some of his stories from the NASCAR circuit and spoke of the importance of being politically involved Attendees were able to explore the museum during the three hour event while it was closed to the general public State Aggregates Association Executive of Year Robert G Jones executive director of the Indiana Mineral Aggregates Association was named NSSGAs 2011 State Aggregates Association Executive of the Year Each year NSSGA recognizes one of its state counterparts for exemplary partnership service to the aggregates industry The award acknowledges the significant beneficial input of the state associations work and leadership as an ally at the national level The award was presented at the Honor Awards ceremony New association in planning stages Some of the buzz on the AGG1 showfloor included mention of a new association forming tentatively called the International Society of Engineered Sand Reports are that it is a new group for individuals interested in manufactured engineered sand and organizers are looking for people interested in forming a steering committee For more information contact Tanya Hudson from ARI at t hudson@ aggregateresearch com 36 PIT QUARRY April 2012 www pitandquarry com
